Today’s interview with John Magee (@jj_magee), VP of Analytics at PerkStreet Financial (@perkstreet) is the first of many interviews we will be conducting with today’s top thinkers, innovators, nerds, entrepreneurs, technophiles, and advertisers. Nick Goggans of Lytiks interviews John about PerkStreet and their free online checking account and debit card which offers 2% cash back on purchases– more rewards than any other debit card.
Nick and John begin the interview by defining analytics and then move to a discussion of analytics in the modern business landscape and how to do analytics right from strategy through implementation. John argues that almost any company can benefit from implementing analytics, but cautions that success relies on analytics being embraced at all levels of the company.
He talks about the unique challenge of balancing creative and rational skills to required to master the mountain of data generated by analytics. John points out that even an advertising campaign designed with the goal of “raising awareness” is ultimately meant to increase sales.
Later John casts into doubt the value of using benchmarks to rate your company’s performance. He describes the pitfalls of comparing yourself to another business in your category, but ignoring the differences between companies that might invalidate the comparison.
John studied brain and cognitive science at MIT, developed technology and analytics capabilities for marketing firms including Euro RSCG and Mullen, and is now in charge of analytics at PerkStreet. He is fascinated with the way people make decisions that affect their finances.
